Why does our universe expand with acceleration? What is dark energy? Although, no one knows, this phenomenon is well-modeled by the cosmological term in the Einstein equation. Noteworthy, quantum vacuum influences evolution of spacetime precisely as the cosmological constant does. However, theoretical estimates of the vacuum energy density indicate a catastrophe. We discuss this problem and examine a particular approach to its solution.
