This book is written for trainee ophthalmologists to help them prepare for their professional examinations. It covers the optical principles underlying the practice of ophthalmology, applying them to clinical situations. The subject is approached from first principles, assuming no previous knowledge of optics. The text has been kept as logical and simple as possible and is liberally complemented with diagrams which are designed to be easily understood and memorised. Only the most fundamental and clinically useful mathematical formulae are quoted. The second edition has been updated and expanded to include lasers and their applications in ophthalmology, the calculation of intraocular implant power, and practical clinical refraction and automated refraction.
