Assuring Nuclear Safety at the Design Stage of Nuclear Power Plants is the second volume in a set of titles that analyses the full spectrum of nuclear safety. An efficient and safe design requires a solid grounding in regulatory fundamentals and best practices, as well a comprehensive understanding of the safety systems that can be incorporated into the design. Beginning with an introduction to the importance of assuring safety at the design stage, the book discusses management systems for plant designs and the concept of defence-in-depth. Subsequent chapters then comprehensively review fundamental safety functions, including step-by-step guidance for carrying out safety assessments at design stage. Designing for an emergency is also discussed, and the book concludes with a case study on the design changes required after the Fukushima accident. Other case studies and real-world examples are included throughout.Assuring Nuclear Safety at the Design Stage of Nuclear Power Plants bridges the gap between foundational knowledge and practical applications in nuclear safety, and is an essential resource for students, researchers, regulators, design engineers and operators within the nuclear energy sector.
