Ferdinand Dennis' travels around West Africa for his BBC Radio 4 series "Journey Round My People", visiting Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra, Leone, Cameroon, Liberia, Guinea and Ghana, are the subject of this book. The author evokes the atmosphere, people and way of life in these countries and reports on their current political and economic state against a historical background, mostly colonial. Recounting incidents and encounters en route, he reflects on his West Indian roots and the tension caused by being black in black countries.
