The region known to many as Kurdistan presently comprises parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria and Armenia. It is a land of stark beauty but also one engulfed in conflict; for centuries, empires, states and waring tribes have fought to control this most enaccessible mountainous region with varying degrees of success.
This year the Kurdish Human Rights Project celebrates its 15th anniversary - commissioned by the Delfina Foundation, this book brings together the images by world famous photographers to celebrate the life and times of the Kurdish people over the last two decades.
Susan meiseles (Magnum Photos) and Jan Grarup (Noor Images) are just two of these photographers whose images have touched on the beauty and vibrant heritage of the Kurds, whilst travelling there to document the harsh realities of existence, as the Kurds are continuously denied the right of land, from every direction.

KHRP was established in 1992 in response to the genocide, war crimes and human rights violations occurring across the Kurdish regions of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria, the Caucasus and elsewhere. Spearheaded by Kerim Yildiz, a Kurdish refugee and human rights postgraduate, and Michael Feeney, Cardinal Hume's advisor on refugees and Director of the Westminster Diocese Refugee Service, a network of leading lawyers willing to undertake pro bono cases to the European Court of Human Rights was established. Mark Muller, a British human rights barrister, encouraged dozens more leading figures in the human rights community to join. They began submitting urgent action appeals and submissions to the European Commission on Human Rights, OSCE and several UN mechanisms.
Founded in 2007, Delfina Foundation promotes artistic exchange and experimentation. We create opportunities for emerging and established artists, curators and writers to reflect on what they do, position their practice within relevant global discourse, create career-defining research and commissions, and network with colleagues. We forge international collaborations to build shared platforms to incubate, to present and to discuss common practices and themes.
