A Certified Internal Auditor and Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, his professional experience includes external auditing with Price Waterhouse (forerunner to PricewaterhouseCoopers), and international internal auditing and financial control with United Technologies Corporation. He was also Chief Audit Executive of Oxford University Press.
