With the inclusion of applications of singular value decomposition (SVD) and principal component analysis (PCA) to image compression and data analysis, this edition provides a strong foundation of linear algebra needed for a higher study in signal processing. The use of MATLAB in the study of linear algebra for a variety of computational purposes and the programmes provided in this text are the most attractive features of this book which strikingly distinguishes it from the existing linear algebra books needed as pre-requisites for the study of engineering subjects.
This book is highly suitable for undergraduate as well as postgraduate students of mathematics, statistics, and all engineering disciplines. The book will also be useful to Ph.D. students for relevant mathematical resources.
The Third Edition of this book includes: - Simultaneous diagonalization of two diagonalizable matrices
- Comprehensive exposition of SVD with applications in shear analysis in engineering
- Polar Decomposition of a matrix
- Numerical experimentation with a colour and a black-and-white image compression using MATLAB
- PCA methods of data analysis and image compression with a list of MATLAB codes

Kanti Bhushan Datta,Ph.D., D.Sc., FNAE, served the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur for 19 years (1982-2001) where he remained professor from 1985 to 2001. Earlier, his another major tenure for 17 years (1965-1982) had been in the Department of Applied Physics, University of Calcutta.
As a Visiting Research Fellow, Prof. Datta visited the Department of Applied Mathematics, Comenius University, Bratislava, Slovakia (1975-1976) and Department of Mathematics and Computing Sciences, Eindhoven University of Technology, Holland (1979-1980). During 1980-1982, he served the Institute of Control Engineering, National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, as a Visiting Expert. Prof. Datta was a Visiting Professor in Department of Mathematics, Northern Illinois University (2001-2002) and an Affiliate Professor in System Science and Mathematics, Washington University in St. Louis (2002-2004).
Although an Electrical Engineer by profession, his research in the Theory of Control Systems, where one encounters linear algebra problems in abundance, motivated Prof. Datta to record his experience in Mathematics in this book. He has also authored two other books in the area of mathematics.
