Amma Darko was born in Tamale, Ghana in 1956 and grew up in Accra.
She was educated at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, graduating in 1980. During the military coup in Ghana, Darko relocated to Germany where she began writing Beyond the Horizon. She later returned to Ghana and published the debut in 1991, winning the Ghana Book Award in 1998. She has since published seven novels in total, her most notable including Faceless (1996) and Housemaid (1999). Darko currently lives in Accra, Ghana, with her husband and children.
