Gene probes, whether RNA or DNA, have played a central role in the rapid development of molecular biology. The wide variety of applications is matched by a considerable diversity in the methods used for generating probes. A complete account of the available methods and their applications is an almost impossible task. Instead the editors of this series have attempted a compromise by combining a selection of newer procedures with a review of the most important established methods, together with some examples of the ways in which gene probes can be applied. By doing so, the aim is to provide not only an introductory manual that will be of benefit to newcomers to the field, but also to broaden the horizons of existing researchers. Among the themes explored in this inaugural volume are the generation of labelled probes, hybridization and the uses and methods of detection of isotopic and non-isotopic probes.
