He is mostly known for his work on the theory of trade protection, including the development of the dutch disease model of international trade. His work also covers international monetary systems, macroeconomic policies of developing countries and Australian economics. He was Senior Advisor in the Research Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 1986 until 1988.
