Online Information Retrieval

In this edition, the author continues to track, in jargon-free language, the latest developments in the rapidly changing information retrieval industry. The book is divided into two sections and progresses from general principles to specific online hosts. It contains a wealth of examples and references, including an appendix of useful sources and a list of databases covered by the various hosts discussed in Part Two; this list is arranged by subject for easier use. In this edition particular attention has been paid to updating the information on CD-ROM technology. Basic principles of searching, storage and retrieval, the enquiry analysis, formulation of search strategy and search costs are all covered at some length. There is also guidance on such practices as cross-file searching, search limitation techniques and document delivery.
