This study was carried out by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) under Contract from the Commission of the European Communities (CEC). The work was overseen by some members of the Society's Health, Safety and Environment Committee (HSEC) and performed largely by the Secretariat of the Committee. The HSEC itself consists of members of the RSC whose affiliations include industry, the trade unions, government and independent consultants. The thirty-one substances studied were selected by the CEC on the basis of their known or suspected carcinogenic properties. The substances covered in this work do not include those already studied under previous CEC Contracts (see Refs 1, 2, etc). The contract requirement was to produce recommended analytical methods for each listed substance when present in workshop air and to provide data on any other methods which had been carried out. In addition, the Committee feel that some additional information might be useful by way of introduction to the analytical methodology and therefore brief resumes have been included covering synonyms, manufacture and uses.
