This volume contains selected edited papers from an international conference on biomedical polymers which took place in Jerusalem in June 1991. The meeting brought together experts in both basic biomaterials science and applied biomedical research from thirteen countries. The work is organized in four sections. The first, Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering, focuses on the design of synthetic polymers for organ transplantation. Section two is dedicated to Biomaterials for Hard Tissue Applications, with papers dealing with diverse aspects of the use of both durable and biodegradable polymers in orthopaedic surgery. Section three is concerned with Biomaterials for Soft Tissue, Blood and Cardiovascular Applications. This section focuses largely on tailoring the implant surface aiming at optimizing the polymer - blood interactions. The final section of the volume is concerned with Biomaterials for Drug Delivery Systems, describing advanced controlled delivery of therapeutics now being developed. This book will be of interest both to biomaterials scientists and polymer (and polymer composite) scientists interested in the latest developments in biomedical polymer applications.
