As the first volume devoted to the clinical and physiological applications of electrical impedance tomography ( EIT ), this timely book is a landmark in the development of a new medical imaging method. EIT enables reconstructed tomographic images of human subjects to be made using a ring of external electrodes; it is non-invasive, safe, portable and inexpensive. EIT is in the process of rapid development, with technical advances anticipated that will reduce the limitations of its spatial resolution and enable it to be used much more widely. Hitherto, the literature has been mainly concerned with technical aspects of the design and construction of the technique. The present volume opens up a broad field of applications, including gastric emptying, gastrointestinal motility, brain function, hyperthermia, pelvic blood volume, and pulmonary ventilation and perfusion. There are extensive introductory reviews which cover all biomedical applications to date, and the available hardware and software.
