This edition of this long established standard work continues the new format of the 16th edition which has been widely welcomed. Not only is the material updated but new areas of information are introduced and issues of current concern discussed. Additional chapters are included on environmental health systems in Europe, the effects of poor housing conditions on health and a review of information technology systems and their use in environmental health service. A new chapter on the enforcement of environmental health law deals with the high profile topics of targeting, programming and consistency of enforcement and these matters are also addressed in other chapters. The deregulation drive is beginning to affect environmental health law and practice, and will continue to do so for some time. Appropiate chapters identify the likely effect. The most substantial changes have been seen in the food safety activity and these chapters have been revised to take account of the effects of the single European market, the establishment of the National Meat Hygiene Service and of the additional role of LACOTS.
