Marcus Clarke was born in 1846 in London and emigrated to Australia in 1863. A prolific writer, Clarke produced more than twenty dramatic works, five published novels, over forty short stories and more than three dozen works of prose and poetry. He was a columnist for The Argus, The Age and the Australasian, and in 1870 was appointed editor of The Australian Journal.
