The modern political condition in Western countries has left their populations effectively emasculated and depoliticesed, while "politics" occupies a site far removed from people's lives. From this starting point, this book presents a case for re-examination of the concept of citizenship. It claims that we have reached a point where conventional definitions are entirely emptied of meaning, and it offers a twist to the notion of alienation in a political sense. Moving beyond Amitai Etzioni's ideas, the book proposes new ways of rethinking citizenship in the community that might begin to have meaning for the world at large.
