Jonathan Carver's Travels Through America, 1766-69

Jonathan Carver, a captain in the Massachusetts colonial militia, was commissioned in 1766 to chart the unknown regions of the American Mid-West. His journal of the three-year exploration was acclaimed by critics everywhere on its publication in 1778. Carver's book has been out of print for over 100 years, and his contribution to the exploration of America has been largely forgotten. The reappearance of his journals makes a welcome contribution to the literature of American history both for the scholar and the interested reader. It is filled with insights into unexplored America of the 18th century, providing the first glimpse of Native American cultures from the Mid West, as well as the flora, fauna, climate and geography. @21 VT, N
