There has been considerable scientific and commercial interest in the production of materials by biological routes over the past few years. The range of these activities has been extremely large. This book attempts to provide a scientific and commercial appreciation of the field. An objective of the book is to illustrate the requirements of a multidisciplinary approach to biomaterials if successful commercialization is to be achieved. Good science and interesting properties are not enough. The book is designed to be of interest to graduates, professionals, managers, commercial organizations, non-commercial organizations and libraries in both universities and in industry. Its primary aim is to be a cross discipline book which can provide an approach that will give an insight to the advances in individual or related fields which could then have an impact on the field of concern. One example of this effect on a counter discipline is when the fermentation technologist produces polysaccharides which can then be used by a geneticist to vary polysaccharide structure and hence properties.
