When you think about great leaders, who comes to mind? Impactful figures like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., or perhaps Winston Churchill. In a huge organization like the New York City Police Department many great leaders have worn the uniform, particularly in the senior management ranks of captain and above. What leadership traits are required to become an NYPD captain. Is the ability to inspire and motivate required? Must these leaders possess vision to see the bigger picture? Do they need to possess empathy for their team members? Do NYPD leaders need to be innovative and creative? The answer is that NYPD captains need none of these leadership qualities.
