The Sea Hound

The Helga, later the Muirchu, was present at the birth of the state and Ireland's first fishery patrol and research ship. Its lifetime coincided with the most important period in Irish history. However, the maritime aspects have received little attention. These include early British fishery policy, naval activities during the War of Independence, later fishery protection and research activities and the setting up of the Irish navy.
