Machines That Learn

This new far-sighted book focuses on the design of robotic devices that can learn from their own experience, without input from outside sources, thus establishing self-sustaining behaviour. These machines of the future will be able to assist people in many tasks, both at home and work. Functions include monitoring industrial equipment, piloting aircraft, and performing many routine jobs without special instructions. The development of such devices is the subject of much ongoing and planned research in a number of fields, including control theory, neuroscience, and behavioural psychology.
