The Essential Teachings of Buddhism

Founded by Buddha, the "Enlightened One", around 500 BC, Buddhism spread rapidly from India to Tibet, China, south-east Asia, Japan and Korea. A highly practical religion, Buddhism has been adapted by the local culture, customs and beliefs of communities wherever it has gained acceptance. As a result, several schools of Buddhism have developed, each with their own sacred texts.
