The two major French trade union confederations, the CGT and the CFDT, differ in the industries represented, the political parties and aims supported, and the methods adopted to further their ends. This book looks at relationships with each other, with parties, and between members and leadership. Most importantly, it shows the link between political aims and industrial action, notably in strikes and collective bargaining. The unions' response to the rigours of EMS entry in the early 1980s is covered, and comparisons are made with British trade unionism.
