The need for this book arose from the fact that the terms used to describe components of fishing gear often differ from region to region, several names can be used for one item or two quite different parts are known by the same name. The glossary was compiled by staff from the English and Scottish Laboratories who gathered information from all types of fishermen and their suppliers. They limited their research to equipment used in the water during fishing, so with some exceptions, deck equipment was excluded. The format of the glossary is designed for quick and easy reference. It lists over 1500 terms used in various localities in the United Kingdom, the type of gear each refers to, a definition of the more generally accepted term, and relates the part - where necessary - to the illustrations. It also cross-references the synonyms used in specific districts.
The simple illustrations are useful for clarifying the definitions as they relate to gill, tangle and trammel netting, drift netting, beach seining, purse seining and ring netting, bottom and midwater trawling, Danish seining, beam trawling, dredging and potting, longlining, handlining, bag netting, as well as basic netting and net making.
