Breyten Breytenbach is an award-winning South African poet and painter who was imprisoned for activities against the state in the days of Vorster and De Klerk. He has been writing about his country for more than two decades, and the essays in this collection cover topics such as blackness, language, art, landscape and, above all, what it is to experience the responsibility of freedom and nationhood after years of oppression by white minority rule.
