Active Experiments/Critical Ionization Velocity

The 29 papers contained in this volume are taken from the above Proceedings. The strong progress made over the last few years in Critical Ionization Velocity (CIV) is well reflected. The development of macroscopic space charge structures, 'ionizing fronts', in CIV interaction is established both in laboratory and in space experiments and also reproduced in computer simulations. New results regarding the role of lower hybrid instabilities in CIV interaction are presented. Active experiments in space involve the introduction of known perturbations into a system under tightly controlled conditions with subsequent multi-diagnostic observations of the resultant effects. Laboratory-in-space experimental techniques are therefore applied to the study of outstanding problems in the terrestrial environment. Experimental techniques described include use of sounding rocket payloads, multi-satellite experiments and observations and radiowave injection facilities.
