Ernst Weil

Im Jahr 1965 übernahm der Künstler Ernst Weil eine Professur für Malerei an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Nürnberg. Die Berufung krönte ein früh anerkanntes künstlerisches Schaffen, das in einem charakteristischen Spätwerk gipfelte. Als Student von Willi Geiger an der Münchner Kunstakademie rezipierte Weil ab 1946 zunächst die Klassische Moderne, bevor er den lyrischen Kubismus Fernand Légers für sich entdeckte, der ihm sein eigentliches Rüstzeug gab. 1957 zog Weil nach Paris, wo er anhand des Motivs des Boxers einen expressiv-dynamischen Stil entwickelte. Als Professor an der Nürnberger Kunstakademie schuf Weil abstrahierte Landschaften, die als Verstrebungen von Farbflächen im Raum aufgebaut sind und poetische wie technoide Züge zeigen können. Erstmals nach fast 40 Jahren wird das Ouvre von Ernst Weil mit einer umfassenden Retrospektive gewürdigt. Zu entdecken ist ein Künstler, der die Debatten um die Ausformulierung der abstrakten Malerei aktiv mitgestaltete. In 1965, the artist Ernst Weil took up a professorship for painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. The vocation crowned an early recognized artistic work that culminated in a characteristic late work. As a student of Willi Geiger at the Munich Art Academy, Weil first perceived classical modernism from 1946 before discovering the lyrical cubism of Fernand Légers, who gave him his real tools. In 1957 Weil moved to Paris, where he developed an expressive, dynamic style based on the boxer's motif. As a professor at the Nuremberg Art Academy, Weil created abstract landscapes that are built up as struts of colored surfaces in space and which may show poetic and technoid features. For the first time in almost 40 years, Ernst Weil's oeuvre is recognized with a comprehensive retrospective.
