Advancement of plant tissue culture, or micropropagation, breeding, genetics and genomics have contributed to mass production of propagules, creating novel hybrids or cultivars, as well as modern tools for improving the molecular breeding efficiency of important crop plants, including ornamentals. This book covers these areas in relation to ornamental plants to fulfil the needs of students and researchers, in addition to commercial vendors. Ornamental biotechnology enables the mass production of young plants, including seed-derived seedlings, and tissue-culture-derived propagules, or mericloned plants. Two chapters are focused on flower industry development and tissue culture business in both Taiwan and Thailand as each produces a large quantity of tropical and subtropical ornamentals, both pot plants and cut flowers, as well as having a strong micropropagation industry to support the floriculture business worldwide. Work in the emerging markets of Latin America is also covered. Breeding and micropropagation of economically important or novelty orchids are elaborated in several chapters, including Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis hybrids. Aroids and roses are also covered. Modern molecular tools such as genomics, molecular markers, gene editing and transformation can help in improving desirable traits and creating potential novel hybrids of ornamentals, and these are covered in detail.

Pablo Bolanos-Villegas is a full-time faculty the University of Costa Rica, in Costa Rica, Central America. He obtained his BSc in plant science at the University of Costa Rica and his MSc at the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology in Pingtung, Taiwan, under the guidance of FC Chen. His doctoral work was guided by Guang-Yuh Jauh at the Taiwan International Graduate Program of the Academia Sinica, in Taipei. Currently, he is trying to determine how ploidy impacts flower development in orchids and how habitat loss impacts population viability. He has published in Plant Cell and Frontiers in Plant Science. He currently serves as an editor at The Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, is a collaborator of The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries (TWAS/UNESCO) and is a member of the International Society for Horticultural Science.

He received a PhD from University of Hawaii, Department of Horticulture working on transgenic anthurium, an tropical ornamental. He has been working in National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, Department of Plant Industry, while serving as the Dean of Agriculture College recent 3 years. He has worked on orchid tissue culture, biotechnology, breeding and development for years. I also served as field editor for Taiwan Society of Horticulture Science as well as Horticultural Journal of Japan in the field of floriculture and biotechnology.
