This book focuses on the use of liposome-entrapped antimicrobial agents for the treatment of abdominal infections. Liposomes are phospholipid bilayers that, when given intravenously, target their aqueous drug contents to the cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system. The book discusses liposome entrapment in animals, which has been found to enhance the efficacy of anti-infective agents against intra-cellular infections such as samonellosis, listeriosis and leishmaniasis. It presents clinical data that liposomal amphotericin B shows promising results in the treatment of hepatic fungal infection in cancer patients. Studies in rats with established abdominal infection show that liposome therapy leads to improved animal survival and bacterial killing.
