Considering fundamental behaviour of granular materials ranging from clays to road aggregates, this text shows how observed properties can be classified and correlated for use in determining parameters for constitutive laws. Mainly remoulded soils are treated in the text, although it also includes some material on in situ soils. An integrated treatment of the whole subject of soil behaviour is provided. The importance of simple, well-established measures, such as the Attenberg Limits and Graduation curves are highlighted and related to modern "critical state" soil mechanics concepts. A number of novel, as well as familiar features are brought together within this framework.
