Since the 1960s, Bernstein's work has been concerned with sociological explorations of the relationship between language, social class and education. This volume develops further the analysis of pedagogic discourse initiated in Bernstein's book "Class, Codes and Control". Here he analyses power and control in educational institutions and provides a theoretical model for how the social structures in classrooms and other cultural institutions are involved in the discourse formation of consciousness and identity, social commitments and everyday social interaction. He also provides examples of the pedagogic institutions from different cultures.
