The use of expert systems and artificial intelligence is spreading at an exponential rate in many areas of economic activity but particularly so in manufacturing and services. An early start in identifying the implications expert systems can have on present and future qualification requirements can be a valuable tool for educators, trainers and management. The papers contained in this volume are the result of an International Workshop organized jointly by the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute, Zurich and the International Labour Office, Geneva. The Workshop is part of a three-year ILO project on the impact of expert systems on qualifications and working life, initiated and financed by the Federal Minister of Education and Science, Bonn, F.R.G. Participants included practitioners, researchers, managers, consultants, concerned staff from private enterprises, respresentatives of government, trade unions and international organisations. The result is a stimulating, fruitful and wide-ranging overview on the trends, issues and implications of expert system introduction and the workplace, which should be of interest to many readers.
