How can higher education institutions make a greater contribution to StadtLand networks and the productive development of rural regions along with their respective provincial towns in Germany? Results from academic teaching and a national winter school have sparked a critical debate regarding the future development of rural communities. Are more academic research and teaching required in rural areas? Does the educational training to become a planner need to be broadened? This publication provides food for thought on how to tap into local know-how and encourage dialog between urban and rural players on equal footing. Prospective planners and designers scrutinize prescribed restrictions and demand a conscious effort to incorporate rural spaces into the curriculum at both schools and universities. They lead the way by developing dynamic images of the provincial town as a teaching and learning environment within the StadtLand system.
