Since its introduction nearly 30 years ago, shunting has amply proved its worth as the method of control of hydrocephalus. However, infection is demonstrably the most troublesome complication, and is associated with considerable morbidity due both directly to the effects of sepsis and indirectly to the effects of shunt failure. This text should be of interest to neurosurgeons, paediatric surgeons and paediatricians involved in the management of patients with hydrocephalus, as well as to infectious disease specialists.
