Although Jinny’s early childhood attempts to dig through the earth to China were unsuccessful, about thirty years later, in 1980, she got her first chance to travel there. The tourist highlights of that initial excursion included a section of China’s signature landmark, the Great Wall. Since then, Jinny has deepened her knowledge of Chinese culture and language, and has traveled to China eight more times. During nearly three years of living in and journeying through some of China’s less-frequented rural areas, she’s seen both western and eastern terminuses of China’s 5,500 mile wall. Jinny Batterson was born in Maryland just after World War II. She grew up in a small town, part of what came to be known as the "baby boom" generation. In adulthood, she has lived in Maryland, Virginia, Vermont, North Carolina and now California. She has traveled in all fifty states. For a total of about five pre-pandemic years, she lived intermittently outside the U.S. She hopes to use her varied experiences to help promote thoughtful discussions of contemporary issues.
