Based on a meeting in Finland in September 1987 in honour of the work of Professor Lars Ehrenberg, this book describes the methods by which human exposure to carcinogens has been detected including immunoassay technique, physico-chemical methods (tandem mass spectrometry, fluorescence line width narrowing spectrophotometry) and post-labelling assays. Adducts from compounds such as epoxides, nitrosamines, mycotoxins, aromatic hydrocarbons and amines and platinum anticancer agents have been detected in exposed people. A number of studies are considered in which molecular markers are being used to assess exposure to environmental, occupational and iatrogenic carcinogens and to relate this to type or incidence of cancer.
