This volume brings together from several disciplines some developments in the nonlinear analysis of systems from biology and medicine and the noise effects on them. It contains a series of co-ordinated lectures on the topics of nonlinearity and chaos in neuronal and cardiac activity, chaos control, spatio-temporal dynamics, noise and stochastic resonance. The applications range from the noninvasive treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and epileptic foci to the development of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques based on the stochastic resonance, to the defibrillation approach based on detailed spatio-temporal models, to the transfer of information in chaotic systems.

Introductory lecture: stochastic resonance in sensory biology - from single neurons to the human visual cortex. Nonlinearity and chaos in neuronal cardiac dynamics: system reconstruction and analysis using interspike intervals; fractal analysis in the heart. Chaos control and its applications: adaptive strategies for recognition and control of chaos; controlling chaos with applications to nonlinear digital communication. Spatio-temporal dynamics: spatio-temporal irregularity of propagating electrical activity in models of cardiac tissue; dynamical control of biological rhythms. Noise and stochastic resonance: chaos and noise in excitable systems. Communications: dynamical system modelling and control of a cardiac arrhythmia; analyzing the multifractal structure of DNA nucleotide sequences. (Part contents).
