This is a senior undergraduate/graduate text for students in chemical physics and physics taking courses in atomic and molecular spectroscopy and spectroscopic applications of lasers. As a comprehensive text on spectroscopic techniques and the relation between spectroscopic information and molecular structure the book will be of interest to others beyond the student level. Mathematical rigour is used only when necessary. The text is supported by a number of examples, and problems for the student are included. An introductory chapter on the necessary background quantum mechanics is included and modern, laser based spectroscopic techniques are highlighted whenever appropriate. This is a total re-write of the text by W. A. Guillory originally published in the 1970s. Areas covered within the text include: Quantum mechanics; Absorption and emission of radiation; Atomic spectroscopy; Rotational spectroscopy; Molecular symmetry; Vibrational spectroscopy; Electronic spectroscopy; Magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
