With more than 1000 articles being published every year, enzyme catalysis is a growing field of research and is finding numerous industrial applications. Practical Enzyme Catalysis provides a comprehensive digest to the current literature and an overview to all aspects of enzyme catalysis and their technical applications. The reader is first introduced to the fundamentals of enzyme catalysis, then the application of enzyme catalysis in chemical synthesis. Catalysis in non-aqueous media is also discussed, and considerable attention is given to the selection and provision of enzymes and their subsequent technical use. Finally, the book examines technology and process design for the successful performance of enzyme catalysis on an industrial scale. Professor Dr Ansorge-Schumacher has over 20 years experience in applied enzyme catalysis, gained through working at both industrial and academic institutes. Currently working in the Department of Enzyme Technology at Technical University of Berlin, Professor Dr Schumacher is also a key member of the "Unifying Concepts in Catalysis" cluster of excellence in association with TU Berlin, Humboldt University and the Free University of Berlin.
Newcomers to the field and experience practitioners alike will benefit from the wealth of information presented in this book. With a focus on technical applications the book is essential reading for industrialists and the inclusion of modern biological and computational methods sets the book apart from others in the field.

Prof. Dr. M. B. Ansorge-Schumacher has been focusing on applied enzyme catalysis since the uptake of her studies in 1990. These studies and research topics have covered all relevant aspects of the field such as mechanism and kinetics, structure, screening, molecular manipulation, fermentation, use of organic solvents, immobilisation and technical application for synthesis. Much of her earlier education and research work took place at RWTH Aachen University, and in the Department of Enzyme Technology at the Research Centre Julich (Julich, Germany) under supervision of Prof. Dr. Maria-Regina Kula. Insights into the development of enzyme catalysis for industrial use were gained within a guest research project at the biocatalysis facility of Degussa AG (Hanau, Germany), now part of Evonik Industries. Since August 2006 Prof. Dr. M. B. Ansorge-Schumacher has been employed by the Technical University of Berlin (Berlin, Germany) to introduce enzyme catalysis into the educational programme and research of the Institute of Chemistry. Within this position, she is also strongly involved in the Cluster of Excellence "Unifying Concepts in Catalysis" initiated by the Technical University, Humboldt University, and Free University of Berlin.
