As representatives of the industrial working class, trade unions are a necessary part of modern society. They have played an important part in the social awakening of India, and also in post-independence India and Pakistan. The early period "free enterprise" has been buttressed by the power of the state acting in support of the economic interests of the colonial powers. It is the view of the author that the Trade Union Movement continues to play a positive role in crushing the exploitative proclivities of free enterprise and in ensuring social justice.
