The first printed book in the Western world was printed on vellum, but printers in modern times testify to the difficulties which skins present. However, they have continued to be used to produce some of the most luxurious and expensive printed books. This catalogue, the first comprehensive listing of books printed on vellum in the collections of the British Library, also includes its Hebrew works on vellum.
