吴忠口述回忆首次（2012年《炎黄春秋》第一期）披露了林彪在"913"之前写给毛泽东、但最终没有送出的一封信。1976年清明节的天安门事件，清场时绝对没有打死人，吴忠为此蒙冤十年。两个凡是，叶剑英讲的最早。1979年，时任广州军区副司令员的吴忠已被下令免职但未宣布，得以参与指挥了对越自卫反击作战。
