Cornwall 1860.
Colenso Carne is forced to flee her family when the local mine owner turns his attentions her way. Forced to shear her long dark tresses, she hides in a wagon to escape, finding herself at the local fair in Helson. Fascinated by the unfettered life of the travelling people, Colenso sets to work on a stall selling rock candy, gingerbread and sweetmeats. But the Fair has a dark side too, and soon Colenso is invited to join the illusionist who thinks her exotic dark looks will help his act.
A letter from home provides the spur she needs, and Colenso determines to leave the fair, finding work at a sweetshop in Penzance, where her skills soon bring her to the attention of local business man Garren Goss. Swapping recipes and ideas, the pair begin to build a formidable reputation for confectionary until a face from Colensos past brings trouble and heart-ache...
Set against the dramatic Cornish coastline, this heart-warming saga of triumph and tragedy will delight fans of Rosie Goodwin and Dilly Court.
