Dieser Band versammelt die Beiträge einer Gruppe von Wissenschaftlern, die im Jahre 2004 begannen, die traditionelle Kategorie der neutestamentlichen Apokryphen bezüglich neuer Perspektiven auf eine größere Kontinuität hin zu überdenken; eine Kontinuität nicht nur zwischen frühen jüdischen und christlichen Schriftstücken, sondern auch zwischen frühchristlicher und spätantiker apokryphen Literatur. Dies ist das Ergebnis des Aufeinandertreffens von zwei (bisher) alternativen Ansätzen: einerseits die Dekonstruktion der üblichen Kategorien des "jüdischen Christentums" und des "Gnostizismus", andererseits die Erkenntnis, dass die Produktion neuer apokrypher Texte bis weit in die Spätantike und darüber hinaus ging. In den zwanzig hier veröffentlichten Aufsätzen werden verschiedene Facetten dieses apokryphen Kontinents neu erforscht, vom christlichen Zueigenmachen jüdischer Geschichten und literarischer Genre, mit dem Schwerpunkt auf den spätantiken Pseudo-Klementinen, zur komplexen und kontroversen Situation der literarischen Rolle, die solchen Figuren wie Judas Ischariot, Maria Magdalena, Maria, der Mutter Jesu oder Petrus zugeschrieben wird.
