Up to 2 per cent of live births display some kind of major abnormality. There has been a tremendous increase in our understanding of the molecular/genetic and cellular mechanisms underlying normal development, emerging from work on animal model systems. To date, this increased understanding has not been communicated in any comprehensive way to the medical community involved in birth defects. This is a radical new book which bridges the gap between embryology, dysmorphology and developmental biology.
