Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) creates profound changes throughout every organ system in the body, resulting in an unacceptably high number of adverse outcomes, including myocardial infarction, stroke, neuropsychiatric defects, infection, pulmonary dysfunction, and perioperative bleeding.
