Housing Transformations and Urban Livelihoods in Informal Settlements

Under the constraints of rapid urban growth and widespread poverty, an urban livelihoods approach provides a valuable framework for understanding how households move in and out of poverty. Housing transformation is a major livelihood strategy among low-income households in urban informal settlements.
Based on empirical investigations in two informal settlements in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the book explores how housing transformations take place, establishes the links between transformations, livelihoods and densification and proposes policy measures to guide housing transformations.
