This book aims to offer a fresh view of modern statistics, showing how mathematical statistics plays an integral role in actual statistical practice. The second edition includes the following features: the bootstrap method is introduced as a tool and integrated with general inferential procedures; Monte Carlo methods are also introduced - some are relatively simple and reinforce calculations, others concern bootstrap and Monte Carlo methods and theoretical material on survey sampling; a number are based on data sets and involve the use of the computer; and the number of examples has been augmented significantly, giving the book more depth of coverage. New examples include interesting applications, such as probability of AIDS infection, state lotteries and polygraph testing. Also, more graphical displays have been added.
