Part One of a two-volume set based on the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1987-88 IMA program on Applied Combinatorics, this text is concerned with coding theory and design theory. Coding theory and design Theory are areas of combinatorics with applications for algebraic structures and are closely interconnected. This text, focusings on design theory, includes examples of abstract sophisticated mathematics being applied successfully to solve real-life problems of communication.
